What does it mean to be Māori enough?
He Māori? is a 50-min solo-show by emerging playwright Isaac Martyn exploring what it means to be Māori - he aha? He Māori? Is he? Maybe... it depends.
Returning to BATS Theatre after a sold-out first season, Isaac Martyn will lead the audience on a journey from total confusion to partial understanding - weaving together elements of te reo Māori, stand-up comedy, waiata, and theatrical performance.
While especially focused on reclaiming Māoritanga from a Pākehā upbringing, He Māori? is for both Māori and Pākehā alike - exploring the doubt, celebration, and the complicated nature of identity.
Presented as part of Tahi Festival 2022.
"Isaac Martyn's delivery and script feels honest, full of charisma and aroha... This is local theatre doing what it does best - challenging us while telling the stories of this land."
— John Anderson, Theatreview, 2022
